Kay Kuntze was born in Berlin. Following many semesters of mathematics,
music pedagogy, music and theater in Berlin, he transferred to the Academy for Music
and Theater in Hamburg. There he received his diploma in studies led by Professor
Goetz Friedrich which he completed with honours.
He then worked as an assistant stage director in engagements that included the Semperoper in Dresden, the Chamber Opera Schloss Rheinsberg and the Schwetzinger Festival. He accepted long term engagements as assistant stage director in Kiel for the Buehnen der Landeshauptstadt, and in Berlin for the Deutsche Oper where he remained from 1996 until 2002. He has since been working as a freelance stage director. In this capacity, he has been invited to collaborate in theaters in Berlin, Hamburg, Dresden, Bremen, Kiel, Lübeck, Bielefeld, Osnabrück, Bremerhaven, Cottbus, Gera, Potsdam, Eisenach, Altenburg, Linz, Innsbruck, Kaliningrad, Kopenhagen, Montpellier, Paris und Tel Aviv as well as for music festivals in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg and the Eutiner Festspiele. In 2002 Kay Kuntze assumed the artistic direction of the Berlin Chamber Opera, for which he has been working regularly as a stage director since 1996. The seasons 2006-08 he was moreover the head director of the Mittelsächsisches Theater. In addition, he fulfills a teaching commission in the program of stage design studies at the TU -Berlin, and is jurymember of the Bundeswettbewerb Gesang and Rheinsberger Opernwerkstatt. |
